On Monday afternoon, I went to Gress, with the aim of locating some of the wargraves in the local cemetery. Having achieved that objective, I ambled down to the beach along the river. Although it was barely above freezing, the cloudscapes and light were magnificent.

"AL, you so often come over (in print which is difficult anyway) as quite unpoetical and prosaic, and suddenly, such beautiful lyrical photographs. Even lighthouses can be unbending..."

"Very nice pictures, Arnish L. Personally, I like the lichened gravestone best. Is there only one gravestone there Arnish, or is it just the way you took the picture? Gress River from the old road bridge makes a very strong impression as well."

"MJC, there are easily several hundred gravestones at Gress. I took the one pictured above to contrast it with the dunes in the background. "

"Every time I see that first photo it makes me think of a leopard or a brindle Great Dane looking out to sea ... Amazing lichen patterns, a testimony to the pure air of Lewis."
