Llamas

As some may be aware, two llamas have been around in the Ness area of Lewis for several months. They would go on walking treks on the beach at Eoropie and along the roads in the district.

Unfortunately, one of them was killed in a road traffic accident today. A motorcyclist collided with the animal, thereby sustaining broken bones and concussion himself. I am informed that the owner is understandably upset, and I am very sad that the unusual sight of Nico and Sam has now been removed from the roads of Ness. The blog about their activities has been cleared of content. I would also like to express my best wishes towards the speedy recovery of the rider, who required hospital treatment for his injuries.

  3. What a shame. Llamas are lovely, they have such adorably gormless expressions on their faces. But surely they didn't wander around freely?

  4. Jill, I do not know the exact circumstances of the accident. What I gather is that they were always accompanied. Anything else is inappropriate speculation on my part

  5. I had a walk with Sam and Nico (and Peter) last year in Berwickshire before they moved to Lewis. If they were on the road they will have been accompanied. Peter really loves his llamas and will be devastated by this accident.

  6. That's OK Arnish, I just wondered. Wandering dogs are bad enough, but wandering llamas... Poor thing. But how nice that someone is able to keep pet llamas! Not really an option for your average person.

  8. It appears someone left the gate open to the field where the llamas were kept. They escaped and wandered into the road, where llama Sam was killed in the collision with the biker. More info on http://bit.ly/hhE6f7

  9. I read about the llama walking treks a wee while ago, through a link from TheCroft. (He of course was deeply scornful of the idea, but as I pointed out, they are friendly docile creatures which don't spit. Not sure the same can be said for TheCroft.. :)
It seems such a shame that this accident has happened, I bet the motorcyclist got a bit of a fright....
