Pairc buy-out

The community buy-out in Pairc, now running into its 6th year, is twisting into the strangest contortions. After attempting to allegedly spread misinformation amongst those in the community who are not very happy with the Pairc Trust (the body conducting the buy-out process), the landlord is now presenting a bill for a trifling three-quarter of a million pound to the Trust. Failing that, to the Scottish Government.

I tend to agree with the Pairc Trust that the estate owner is now finally revealing his true colours, if they had not already been patently clear beforehand. The community buy-out in Pairc (South Lochs) is taking an inordinate amount of time, with many attempts at thwarting and frustrating the process.

I hope the Scottish Government will finally put its money where its mouth is and bankroll the Pairc Trust rather than the outgoing landlord.

I've been following this story for quite some time now and thank you A.L. for giving us regular updates etc.

As you can see from my moniker, I lived on the islands during the 1990s and knew the Landlord in question very well, he was a close(ish)neighbour. I found him and his wife, and children for that matter, a very reasonable and generous family.

They would always arrive for the fanks and helped the shepherds with hard graft and often refreshments too. He loved all the activities that went on and couldn't wait to catch up on local goings-on on arrival.

I wonder why his attitude is different in this instance to his neighbours? Are they being reasonable I ask?

  2. Former Islander,
I appreciate your comments in this matter. It may be worth bearing in mind that attitudes and people can change in the space of a decade or two, as has been demonstrated elsewhere in the Inner and Outer Hebrides. I am confident that the Pairc laird is a decent man on a personal level, and agree that where two squabble, there are commonly two at fault. This is not me being diplomatic, but rather giving a boiled-down summary of the ding-dong battle that is raging below the surface. Every now and again, a bubble of sulphurous gas will explode into the open, leaving us all with a whiff of putrefaction. The question whether the islanders are being unreasonable, or the landlord is being obstructive is open for dispute, and not one I want to become involved in on an open internet blog.

Fully understood arnish. I just felt it worthwhile sharing a little insight into one of the protagonists in the dispute.

I shall drop in from time to time and catch up with this ongoing story.
