Arnish Fabrication Yard

The revolving door scenario at the Arnish Fabrication Yard continues. Later this year, the industrial site will reopen to manufacture windturbines for the better part of 2009. The machines are destined for a marine windpark off the coast of Cumbria, northwest England. The Arnish Fabrication Yard has had a number of operators in the past few years, none lasting much longer than a year at a time. At one point, the site was closed down whilst turbine towers were still being made. As a result, the intermediate product was shipped to Denmark for completion - and one of the towers was lost overboard in a force 9 gale on return. It presently provides a habitat for marine life at the bottom of the North Sea.

  1. If they couldn't make it during the "boom" how will it go in this "bust" economic climate? The revolving doors are closing on Saab cars and there is loose talk of them making wind turbines too. We have a successful wind turbine manufacturer in Malmö, the work force isn't large and the pieces are quite different shapes and sizes from car pieces, so it is a bit hard to see how Saab could be successful without large and long govt. subsidies. But I certainly hope they get something new and successful on board. They never really made a profit making cars, although the cars themselves were/are nice to drive (but not to service).

  3. Sunny,
The old blogs remain on BBC Island Blogging, as yet unaltered. You'll have to email islandblogging[at]bbc[dot]co[dot]uk (please replace the [**] things with the requisite symbol to get your blog transferred to a new site. This site is NOT related to the BBC.

If you want to join, just visit http://islandblogging.co.uk and follow the prompts. Please make it clear that you used to be an Island Blogger (I'm aware you're now on the mainland), otherwise you may be declined a blog. I'll email Les as well.

IBHQ does not exist on this site as such; visit above site.

  4. Thanks, Arnish, I'll try to get to grips with it all in the morning. It's awfully latehere now. I'm still living in Cyprus but het home fairly often. Surely it must be the Fank soon? What's Clumannabel and Annie Beag blogging under these days?

Sorry to hyjack your replies, you were the first friendly name I saw and knew you wouldn't let le down. Sunny. X

  5. Calumannabel is not on this Island Blogging site, as he found it impossible to work (it is quite fiddly), so I don't think there will be a fank this year.

  6. Its not that fiddly if a totally computer-illiterate cat can do it! I think the Fank, like calumannabel has become passé:-)

  7. Aye, its a sore loss, and not a sign of the compressible, irrepressible and irresistable hotter, heither. Perhpas with this tubo-new new IB they will come home to roost, if a little bird were to whisper to them? This clicky-box thing is pretty smart. If I had a hat I would take it off to Les, but who wears a hat when in bed?

  8. Thanks Arnish. I'll try to find the time. I'm home about once every 3-4 months now but only for the good stuff! Unlike the Fank the events on Arran are verry real, enjoyable and explosive. I don't know if I'll get my heid round this new fangled thingumygig. Maybe when I've retired and got the thyme. I'm lobbying the Cyprus Caledonian Society to build their own long ship, just like Arran did!

Keep blogging and thank you for your help. XXX

  9. I'd love to know what's so fiddly and why some people can't cope. Login - click Write a post - type a title and your post - click Publish. Done. I've racked my brains but can't figure out how the BBC site could have been easier than that!

  10. Activating Akismet was a learning curve for me, but a very very necessary one. All else is pretty intuitive and made crystal clear on Help Me Blog. Its like a virtual sweetie shop full of goodies!
Nostalgia ain't what it used to be...

  11. PS. Sunny, does this mean you regard the rest of us Johnny-come-latelies as unfriendly?
    I'm feeling a bit crushed...
