Stornoway, March 2008

Spring appears to be on its way, in spite of the continued chilly spell. Just wanted to share a couple of pictures from around town, taken this month. Most notable: the Pyramid outside Woolworths, has been removed, and the Town House itself has had its fire damage repaired. At present, major ground works are underway in the Narrows, although they are not clearly visible in the pics.

"Have a nice spring, Arnish. I am puzzled by pic. 3 from top: north beach, it says. What exactly are we seeing/ supposed to see?"

"MJC, You are seeing what it says on the box: the street called North Beach with the Lewis Hotel on the left, with a storage area for fishing nets in front. "

"Nice pics of the area. Are there any old pictures of Kildun House in Arnish in the local library? My interest is that I am a direct descendent of Mrs Mackenzie who lived there and gave shelter to BPC. The WEB site below will you about my ancestors "From Kildun to the Crimea" http://www.electricscotland.com/mackenzie/images/news394.pdf "

"Trevor, Will have a peek at some stage. Kildun House was demolished in the 1970s, together with the hill it stood on, to make way for the Arnish Fabrication Yard."

"Thank you for your prompt reply and picture of Kildonan Cottage. The 1904 Celtic Monthly Vol.Xll page 173 mentions that Kildun House was known as Arnish Farm house. Hope this helps to correctly identify the property. Is Kildun House and Kildonan Cottage one of the same? Many thanks for your help "
